Remembering Martin Luther King Jr.
Today we celebrate the legacy of the revolutionary civil rights leader, Martin Luther King Jr. Most American workers and school-aged children are bequeathed with a day off in return for the work Martin Luther King did to advance a peaceful civil rights movement in the US. But, few probably take the time to reflect on what MLK’s life meant to so many of us.
Martin Luther King Jr. challenged the status quo through his peaceful protests for civil rights and advocacy for equal rights in America. Despite Dr. King’s peaceful approach towards the civil rights movement, he faced death threats, violence and legal persecution. The level of adversity he endured didn’t stop him from pushing forward and fighting for the rights he believed all people deserved.
King once told TIME, “is not based on resistance to get rights for ourselves, but to achieve friendship with the men who are denying us our rights, and change them through friendship and a bond of Christian understanding before God.”
Today we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. not only for all of the things he did throughout his life but in remembrance of why he pursued a peaceful route towards equality and civil rights.
As King told Time magazine, “If we as Negroes succumb to the temptation of using violence in our struggle, unborn generations will be the recipients of a long and bitter night of—a long and desolate night of bitterness. And our only legacy to the future will be an endless reign of meaningless chaos.”
Dr. King certainly left a legacy of a peaceful, God-fearing outlook on facing adversity in this life. And for that I am grateful.
